Things We learned Last Night (Club Meeting 25 Sept 2023)

If you weren’t there, you missed a good presentation.

We have billed our full size tenants for the use of our lush lawns.

And, the Grande Finale of the Hanky Planky Wacky Races is set for Sunday 22 October, at Knettishall naturally.

The BBQ (bring or buy) on 22 October is once more courtesy of Ron Spencer. This time with a proviso – wear a ‘plane themed hat or risk being refused food. Ron Gray will bring along a demo version of next years competition model, rumoured to be kitted at £10!

Jet Masters in Italy

An excellent presentation by Chairman James, ably rescued with facts from son, Alex. It seems that Alex’s flying was a big hit with some of the aficionados of serious scale jet competition.

Less so his (very well presented) aircraft.

James entered with an incredibly accurate and detailed Jet Provost, but with no time to practice with his new steed & some challenging issues constantly emerging. Even on the first day of competition.

With temperatures hot enough to melt tarmac and to interfere with jet engines; late changes to the rules that were not passed on to all the teams; and the effrontery of wearing a white T shirt emblazoned with a George Cross, James, at least, was up against it.

The actual winner was:

  1. Someone who could fly well
  2. A chap who used a 3D scanner to copy a full size aircraft and to produce a mold for an exact replica

What I learned was that ‘scale’ judging knows no limits for detail.

What the Jet Masters club learned is to reduce the final value of the static score to a 20% contribution of the total score (from 50%) next year. If the event takes place – national sponsors are hard to find.

Needless to say, success doesn’t come cheap or easily. All in all, a pretty exclusive club.
