Club Meeting 27 February 2023

A pretty good turnout and great to see some old friends able to make it last evening. There was a lot to discuss and clarify about our current two sites and Ron Gray was able to distribute more of his Hanky Planky kits and introduce his latest enterprise – model stands.

The minutes will tell the definitive tale of course, but meanwhile here is a catchup for those of you unable to make it to the meeting.

  • We elected a new member. Welcome Justin Grimes, a clearly accomplished, though lapsed, model flyer. That makes 76 flying members paid up for this year

  • We must leave Rougham by 31 may 23
    • Arrangements are being made by James to move our container and equipment before that
    • It would help enourmously if the container could be rested at Knettishall. Negotiations are in hand
    • All planned events for 2023 will be at Knettishall
    • Rumours abound around full size flying at Knettishall, but our landlords confirm that we are welcome there and that there are practical limitations on the number of full size aircraft able to use the strip

  • Everyone was asked to positively look for new sites. Recent events suggest that complacency will lead to no model flying in our area!
    • Vic and James are prepping a letter that can be sent to identified land owners as a start to meaningful contact
    • To send it, they need prospects – sites and owners
    • You may not know any landowners, but you may be able to discover some if you can identify appropriate land
    • If you have contacts in the farming community, please talk with them
    • Interesting article in RCM&E this month about Alport Model Flying Club (www.alportmfc.co.uk). Physically not much use to members being close to Belper, Derbyshire. But what a beautiful site which they share with a cricket club! Flying times are not as limited as you may think, their website includes a timetable. Take a look and dream of such facilities. How many local sports clubs would be keen to share costs and finance improvements with our contribution?

  • Both Robin and Kevin still have many items for sale. Robin is particularly keen to clear hangar space for future projects. Take a look, serious bargains are available

  • The launch date for the 2023 Hanky Planky Wacky Races was announced – Sunday 16 April 23 – with BBQ
    • Volunteers appreciated – contact Ron Gray or Ian McDowell

  • We also confirmed Sunday 14 May 23 for another go at the World Record – with an open invite to families to come along, experience some first hand flying and enjoy the BBQ
    • Volunteers appreciated – contact Ron Gray or Ian McDowell

  • And, by no means least, Ron Spencer proudly displayed ‘This Side Up’, his competition Hanky Planky, resplendent and oh so identifiable, in bold checks. More photos in the Hanky Planky Members Gallery
